I am glad to note the significant accomplishments of the PCAMRD for 2007. As the R & D planning council for our country’s aquatic and marine resources sector, the PCAMRD has performed well, based on its Major Final Outputs as elucidated by Dr. Guerrero.
The 2008 ATCOM winners were awarded during the Philippine Council for Aquatic and Marine Research and Development’s 20th founding anniversary celebration on January 31 at PCAMRD, Los Baños, Laguna.
The Project Management Committee (PMC) of the ASEAN-ROK Cooperative Programme of Industrial Use of Marine Biological Resources held its second meeting in Cebu City, Philippines on 19-21 February. The meeting was held to review and finalize the databases on marine biotechnology of each ASEAN country member. Several countries in the region participated in the meeting, namely, Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Viet Nam and Republic of Korea (ROK).
Thanks to the National Vermicompost and Vermimeal Production Program (NV2P2) supported by the National Economic Development Authority and the Government of Japan through the KR2 Program for Underprivileged Farmers, the suitable earthworm species known as “African nightcrawler” can now be availed of by small farmers at a price of P30 per kilo in 16 regions of the country.

The Fisheries School-on-the-Air on the culture of penaeids (Pacific white shrimp or Litopenaeus vannamei) or simply “Paaralan ng Pangisdaan sa Himpapawid-Pag-aalaga ng Hipong-puti”, was implemented by PCAMRD of the Department of Science and Technology, Santeh Feeds Corporation (SFC) and the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI) of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in 2007. The program was aired over “Bago ‘Yan Ah!” program of DZMM, ABS-CBN, 630 Khz every Sunday from June 10 to September 9, 2007.
Smoked fish cake, locally known as podpod, is an ethnic fish product in the island barangay of San Vicente, Sulat, Eastern Samar. Traditionally, podpod is prepared from fishes like dolphinfish, siganid, skipjack tuna, parrot fishes, anchovies, or mackerel with salt only added.
The Panukat Isda or Fish Ruler is a simple device that helps fishers tell whether the fish they catch are ready for harvest. It was introduced to the public on March 12 during a press conference and exhibit held at the Imperial Palace Suites, Quezon City. The target-help lessen the volume of immature fishes that glut the market.
The competition on National Aquatic Resources Research and Development System (NARRDS) Best R & D Papers was awarded during the 20th Founding Anniversary of PCAMRD on January 31 at the PCAMRD Headquarters, Jamboree Road, Timugan, Los Baños, Laguna. The competition is intended to identify mature technologies in fisheries and aquatic resources that will boost production and support the livelihoods of Filipinos.

Jellyfishes were once regarded by fishermen as pests that clogged their nets and fish corrals thereby reducing their fish catch. Some species of jellyfish are considered harmful to man because of their deadly stings. Foreign literature and studies, however, have cited the economic, medicinal and ecological importance of jellyfish.
With the theme “Setting New Gender-Responsive Trends and Challenges Towards Fisheries Development,” the National Network on Women in Fisheries in the Philippines, Inc. (WINFISH), will hold its Fourth National Conference on Gender and Fisheries at the SEAMEO Innotech, Diliman, Quezon City on May 21-22, 2008.
